Complimentary Support
Complementary literacy lessons are an integral part of our inclusive educational approach, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive.
Supporting every learner
Through early intervention, small-group sessions, one-to-one support and in-class guidance, pupils are helped to build confidence and reach their full potential.
Helping each child grow in confidence and ability
At our school, complementary literacy lessons are an integral part of our inclusive educational approach, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive. These lessons primarily focus on pupils in Years 1, 2 and 3, who are identified by their class teachers as experiencing difficulties with reading. Early intervention at this stage is vital, allowing us to address specific learning challenges before they become more deeply ingrained and impact overall academic progress.
Structured support that responds to each child’s needs
Complementary teachers work closely with class teachers to provide the right support at the right time, helping students develop literacy skills and positive learning habits.
Early Identification
Class teachers identify pupils who may be experiencing reading difficulties in the early years.
Small-Group Support
Children receive targeted help in small groups, allowing focused attention and encouragement.
One-to-One Sessions
Individual sessions help learners develop essential literacy skills at their own pace.
Positive Learning
Support helps pupils build reading confidence and cultivate a positive attitude towards learning.
Early support for reading and literacy
Our complementary teachers provide targeted support through small-group or one-to-one sessions, helping young learners develop essential literacy skills, build reading confidence and cultivate a positive attitude towards learning.
Early intervention is central to the programme. By supporting children at the first signs of difficulty, we help reduce barriers to learning and strengthen the foundations needed for future academic success.
This approach reflects our wider inclusive educational ethos, where every child is seen, supported and encouraged to progress according to their individual needs.
Identified by class teachers
Support begins through close observation and communication with the class teacher.
Targeted literacy work
Sessions focus on reading, confidence and the specific literacy needs of the child.
Responsive support
The programme responds to each child’s progress, needs and learning pace.
In-class support for writing and expression
Weekly Classroom Visits
In Years 4, 5 and 6, complementary teachers provide in-class support during weekly classroom visits.
Consultation with Class Teachers
Support is planned after careful consultation with the class teacher, ensuring it matches the pupils’ needs.
Writing Guidance
Pupils receive encouragement and tailored support to organise their ideas, refine their writing and express themselves clearly.
Helping every child reach their full potential
Through this structured and responsive programme, we aim to meet the individual learning needs of each child, supporting them to reach their full potential in literacy and beyond.
